Premise

Somehow, the horde of male adolescents, young adults, and young adults at heart have learned a lot about Rift without playing it at all. The game, like many a MMORPG download, focuses on you, the player, being born with strength or magical powers in a universe where interaction with other dimensions and unrest is expected. Rift, however, has taken this cliché idea and expanded on it quite well.

For instance, what other game lets you select from 28 other classes? Yes, 28, all with sufficiently fancy names to give every player something to brag about. Cool_Boy78 the Inquisitor. I like it.

The advertising crew of Rift have specifically highlighted the dynamic nature of the game. In other MMORPGs, changes to the world only happen in nicely packaged, completely predictable, and often buggy updates. While Rift will be updating their game normally, the game itself changes the world without caution, making it the first game to implement a "things happen" engine.

Combat

This MMORPG download does have an intense focus on PvP combat, something that many other RPG downloads really just throw in to go with the expected flow. Rift has a PvP Soul system, which gives each class its own special touch to PvP combat. The process sounds complicated to me (it involves trees and division, and I never took botany), but you have a soul and you ought to flaunt it!

While they're not nearly as entertaining as the infamous Wilderness of RuneScape, Rift does have several battlefronts scattered throughout the curious world of Telara. All of the grounds feature a kind of game, whether it be Steal the Acidic Flag at the Black Garden, Cool Kid of the Hill at The Codex, or Children vs. Zombies at Port Scion, all of which sound pretty entertaining to me. I'd also be entertained just watching a bunch of people getting offended by losing or not winning good enough.

Installation

You can get pre-order the digital download of Rift right now from Amazon for $49.99, or fork out ten extra bucks for the Collector's Edition. The game is Windows only, and requires a dual core CPU and at least 2 GB of RAM. This is bound to be the MMORPG download of 2011 thus far, so be sure to get it so you can be cool like your friends!
