Starcraft 2 Guide - How To Contain Enemies

Introduction
A contain in Starcraft 2 is the technique where you disable your enemy's expansion capability by creating a static defense right outside his ramp. It can force them to engage and break your blockade, usually on unfavorable conditions.
The contain is a great technique to achieve almost full map control, being free to expand without the fear that your enemy will attack your expansions or main base. It also provides a huge economic advantage by delaying your opponent's economy.
Countering the Contain
While you can use brute force to break a blockade, it usually is a bad idea. A contain will always create favorable conditions for your opponent with the use of choke points and concaves that offer him a larger firepower. A better way to escape a contain is using alternative means like:
- Medivacs
- Warp prism
- Nydus Worms
If you manage to escape using these methods you can successfully flank the enemy blockade, or counterattack his own base. A base counterattack will force him to retreat his blockade to counter your attack.
Race specific
Zerg
  • Zerg players commonly contain enemies using Spine Crawlers via a proxy Hatchery or creep tumors.

  • Photon Canon contains are very popular for the race as they are very easy to set up and very hard to break in the early game.
  • Sentry Force Fields can be used to block the enemy ramp

  • Bunker Contains are popular and are best complemented by large hp buildings to wall the enemy in.
  • Siege Tank Contains backed up by Missile Turrets to detect stealth units or counter air threats.
